Case studies showing examples of different types of solutions and clients.

Openia is committed to providing high quality solutions that show good design. Both, the software design and the visual part are given equal importance, to make sure the total solution is the right one. Below are a few case studies showing some of our work. These examples show a wide veriety of open source technologies we use to provide real solutions to real requirements.

Case: Accessible Mail

A Plone system that has been modified to provide user registration and sign-up for a webmail service. The Accessibility was an especially high priority, and this target was achieved well and in a short time by using the "out-of-the-box" tableless CSS design for Plone.

Case: Accessible Mail Webmail System

The actuall mail system and backend code was required to be highly Accessible and Usable, while maintaining the main functionality of web mail systems. There was also a requirement to allow different layout and colours to be provided by different users of various impairments. This was achieved with XML, XSLT and some wizadry with Apache. This system is now opperational.

Case: Azzawi

This Plone web site is designed to be very simple and straight-forward without any clutter. The effective layout and open design is intended to be congruent with the message contained within the web site, that of an openess and basicness.

Case: Create A Scene

The primary requirement for this client was to be able to add multimedia content to the web site without using any special web site knowledge or software. Due to the fact that this is a creative design company, the visual aspect is seen as very important, and the client wanted to maintaine the creative look of the web site, which they provided. We helped the client address some usability issues, and then implemented the final design into Plone. The result is a very structured web site that has a strong element of creativity, and the feedback we have had is that it works very well for conveying the information to the visitors.

Case: Media Watch ME

Although this is a Plone site, there has been significant additional development on the back-end. This is an application that stores 10's of 1000's of articles and images, and the data is then sent in summary format as a newsletter twice a day. The same data is also searchable for account holders. The application is complex and the infrastructure ensures data integrity and reliability. There are load-balanced front-end servers, and redundant back-end database servers. This configuration is based on a ZEO-DB cluster.

Case: Nelson Consulting

A very simple and very effective Plone web site that allows the marketing staff members to create page, newsletter updates, and general editing, with the minimum of fuss. We like simple and effective, and so do our clients.

Case: Noble Group

Noble Group is an Investment Bank based in Edinburgh and London. The requirement for an Intranet system that allowed access to company documentation for all the employees (on-site and off-site) was also complicated by the IFA rules that govern all financial establishments. The system had to be secure and adhere to the strict IFA rules. The Plone system we built for them also connected the existing network for user-authentication. The system is a great success, and is currently being used throughout the company to great effect. We are currently completing the public facing web site which will be complete shortly.

Case: Openia

Our own web site is also based on Plone, and we invite you to take a look around. The web site provides us great flexibility for creating new functionality and connecting to back-end database systems.

Case: Pyramid Visuals

Pyramid Visuals came to use to redesign their existing web site to create a system they can optimise for search engines and content. We used Plone for this solution, and the web site is highly optimised for code. The web site now typically achieves rankings of 1-4 on Google for the search terms specified by the client.

Case: Pyramid Visuals Order System

For an in-house ordering system that is linked to a client database, we used Group Office system (open source) as our starting point for development. Functionality such as automatic quote-generation, emailing clients of status of jobs etc. are part of the system. Since the initial development, the system has grown to be very much part of the company's work-flow, and has significantly improved the company's work-efficiency, thereby positively affecting the bottom-line. This has been a great success.

Case: PPD Learning

Having gone through a re-design process PPD-Learning management where still unstatisfied with the overall efficiency, usability and accessibility of the web site. Openia was commissioned to make a dramatic improvement to all these factors to a very tight budget and timescale. The improvements were instantly noticed from day-one of the launch. A very happy client indeed.

Case: AAP

For the AAP (Association of Accessibility Professionals), having an Accessible CMS for the public facing part is one requirement, the other requirement was for the back-end to be Accessible. Plone provided the right solution, and the implementation had to be the highest standards, to the tinyest detail, without compromise.

Case: www.battery.co.uk

Having traded mostly by phone/mail order, this company was aiming to take advantage of its domain name to increase sales and brand awareness. Within one month, the Interchange site was completed according to specifications, and ready for testing and training. One of the main attributes to the success of this site was the close working relationship we developed with the client. This enhanced the outcome of the training and resulted in a well thought out system. We released the site exactly on schedule and orders rolled in from day one!! Online credit card payment was done through PGP encrypted email, and then entered through a manual PDQ device.

Case: Rowledge Primary School

The school required a simple web site that was easy to navigate and provide a simple interface for staff and pupils to be able to update the web site on a regular basis. We provided the school with a full featured web site, including news and events sections. The web site was nominated for the Hampshire Hantsweb Awards 2003, and was runner-up in the final judgment.

"A simple, clean design and easy navigation make this site simple to use. Excellent accessibility."

Case: Sequoia Research Chemicals

SeqChem.com was conceived as research chemical supplier. However, the key difference for this company was that the whole inventory, supplier information, quotations, sales and administration is done electronically. Moreover, the key difference was that it was "through the web". This meant that all administration tasks were done through any web browser connected to the Internet, anywhere in the world. This would give staff the ability to trace orders, check supplies and edit inventory, technical and sales, details while on the road. This strategy allowed fficient and fast turn-around of orders and enquiries. The project has been such a great success that we have been asked to start work on implementing the same framework for a sister company.
